Self-care

For teething children, try ice pops or cold objects to soothe sore gums. Limiting sugary foods may help reduce saliva production.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Child has fever, trouble breathing, or holds his or her head in strange position
  • Problems speaking
  • Muscle weakness or numbness in mouth or body

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Unexplained drooling
  • Gagging or choking
  • Occurs after starting new medication
