When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Overdose
  • Changes in consciousness
  • Trouble breathing
  • Seizures or convulsions
  • Signs of a possible heart attack, such as chest pain or pressure

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Unable to stop using a drug
  • Episodes of depression
  • Unsafe behavior, such as sharing needles or unprotected sex
  • Withdrawal symptoms after stopping drug use
