Nonprescription antihistamine medicine taken by mouth may help easy any itching. Nonprescription pain medicine can help reduce a fever. Drinking fluids and getting plenty of rest also may help.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a healthcare professional right away if the rash comes with:

  • Infection.
  • Severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, unconsciousness, or seizures.
  • Severe belly pain.
  • Severe cough or difficulty breathing.
  • Chest pain.
  • Fever and purple spots.

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a healthcare professional if the rash comes with:

  • Fever for more than a day.
  • Diarrhea or vomiting.
  • Red eyes, mouth, or tongue.
  • Rash on the palms or soles.
  • Swollen, painful joints.
