Self-care

Self-care options include gentle stretching, massage and icing muscles after exercise. Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) available without a prescription can help too.

When to seek immediate medical care

Seek medical care immediately if there is:

  • Chest pain during or after exercise.
  • A possible broken bone.
  • A joint that appears out of position.
  • A pop or snapping sound.

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a health care professional if muscles soreness:

  • Does not improve with self-care steps.
  • Is persistent or severe.
