Self-care includes taking a timeout before speaking or acting. Relaxing activities, such as deep-breathing exercises, listening to music, or exercise, may help.

When to seek immediate medical care

Seek emergency help if:

  • Physically violent or threatening violence toward others
  • Out-of-control behavior, such as breaking things or driving recklessly

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Constant cynical, irritated, impatient, critical, or hostile feelings
  • Frequent arguments escalate frustrations
  • Anxious or depressed
