Self-care
Rest, and elevate the ankle when possible. Apply ice pack up to 20 minutes, three times a day, and wrap with a compression bandage. Pain medicines you can get without a prescription may help.

- Fever, redness or warmth.
- Can't bear weight on ankle.
When to make a doctor's appointment

- Pain persists for a few weeks.
- Limits ability to work, walk or complete daily tasks.
