Ankle pain

Self-care

Rest, and elevate the ankle when possible. Apply ice pack up to 20 minutes, three times a day, and wrap with a compression bandage. Pain medicines you can get without a prescription may help.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a health care expert immediately if:

  • Obvious injury.
  • Severe pain or swelling.
  • Fever, redness or warmth.
  • Can't bear weight on ankle.

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a health care professional if:

  • Swelling doesn't improve within five days.
  • Pain persists for a few weeks.
  • Limits ability to work, walk or complete daily tasks.
