When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Bloody or discolored urine
  • Painful urination, a strong urge to urinate, or difficulties urinating or emptying the bladder
  • Pain in side, lower abdomen, or groin
  • Loss of bladder control
  • Fever

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • No apparent cause, such as drinking more total fluids, alcohol, or caffeine
  • Disrupts sleep or everyday activities
  • Excess thirst
  • Daytime fatigue
  • Change in urinary patterns
