Self-care

Let ice chips melt over the ulcers, or rinse your mouth with salt water or baking soda and water to lessen pain. Avoid spicy, acidic, or abrasive foods.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • High fever
  • Very difficult to eat or drink

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Very large ulcers
  • Lasting two weeks or more
  • Pain that doesn't respond to self-treatment
  • Recurring sores
