Self-care options include a warm, moist cloth on the ear and pain medicines available without a prescription. Be sure to take only as directed. Don't give aspirin to children.

- Discharge of fluid, pus or blood from ear.
- Severe pain.
When to make a doctor's appointment
Make an appointment to see a health care provider for:
- Fever.
- Symptoms that last more than one day.
- Child that's irritable and restless.
- Hearing that gets worse over time.
