Muscle Spasms

Stretch, and gently massage the area. Icing the area may stop a spasm, as can applying heat with a warm towel or heating pad or running hot water on the muscle in the shower.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Severe and persistent pain
  • Leg swelling, redness, or other skin changes
  • Muscle weakness

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Frequent
  • Cause isn't clear
  • Self-care doesn't help
