Abdominal obesity

Description

Excess weight that develops over time around the center of the body. Abdominal fat is also called visceral fat.

Self-care

Eat a healthy diet, rich in vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Avoid saturated fats and large portions. Aim for 150 minutes or more of moderate aerobic activity each week.

When to make a doctor's appointment

See a health care professional if:

  • Waist measurement is above 40 inches (about 102 cm) for men, or 35 inches (89 cm) for women. Fat stored around the waist may further increase the risk of heart disease and diabetes even if body mass index is normal.
