Self-care

Self-care options include liquids, lozenges, cough drops, vaporizers, and steamy showers. Over-the-counter drugs are available, but check with doctor for child under 6.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Choking
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Blood in phlegm

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Fever of 100 F (38 C) or higher
  • Phlegm is yellow or green
  • Wheezing
