Overactive bladder

Description

A condition that causes a frequent and sudden urge to urinate that may be hard to control.

Overview

Overactive bladder is linked with conditions such as diabetes, bladder stones and enlarged prostate. Some medicines also may play a role in overactive bladder. So might drinking too much caffeine or alcohol.

Symptoms

Overactive bladder symptoms can include a sudden urge to urinate and leaking of urine. Urination may happen eight or more times in 24 hours. A person also might wake up more than twice a night to urinate.

Treatments

Overactive bladder treatment sometimes involves diet changes, scheduled bathroom breaks and exercise to strengthen pelvic floor muscles. Medicines, procedures and surgery also are treatment options.
