Nephritis

Description

Swelling, also called inflammation, of the kidneys.

Overview

There are various types of nephritis. They have different causes including infections, autoimmune diseases and certain medicine allergies. Swelling linked with nephritis can affect different parts of the kidneys.

Symptoms

Nephritis symptoms depend on the type of nephritis a person has. Urine may look pink, brown or foamy. The hands, feet or face may appear swollen. Upset stomach, vomiting, cramps, fatigue, a rash or flank pain may occur.

Treatments

Nephritis treatment depends on the cause of the condition. It may involve treating an underlying disease or changing or a medicine. If kidney damage is advanced, dialysis or a kidney transplant may be needed.
