Mitral valve prolapse

Overview

Mitral valve prolapse is a type of heart valve disease. The valve's flaps have extra tissue or are floppy. They can bulge backward like a parachute. Blood can flow backward across the valve. Anyone can have mitral valve prolapse. It can run in families and may be linked to other health conditions.

Symptoms

Symptoms may include an irregular heartbeat, dizziness, shortness of breath, and fatigue.

Treatments

Most people don't need treatment. Some people need medicine or heart valve surgery.
