Hypertension

Description

High blood pressure; generally a blood pressure reading of 130/80 millimeters of mercury or higher.

Overview

Hypertension, also called high blood pressure, happens when the force of blood against the artery walls is too high. It can lead to heart attack, stroke and other serious health conditions. A healthy lifestyle can prevent hypertension.

Symptoms

There may not be symptoms. Some people have headaches or shortness of breath.

Treatment

Treatment includes lifestyle changes. Don't smoke, eat a healthy diet and get regular exercise. Some people need medicines.
