Overview

Hives are itchy welts on the skin. They are often an allergic reaction to certain foods, medicines, or other irritants.

Symptoms

Hives can be small to several inches across and their color varies depending on the usual skin color. Difficulty breathing or swallowing is a medical emergency.

Treatments

Hives usually clear on their own in 24 hours. The type of antihistamine that you can buy without a prescription can help ease symptoms.
