HELLP syndrome

Decription

A serious complication of high blood pressure during pregnancy.

Overview

HELLP syndrome usually happens before the 37th week of pregnancy. But it can happen soon after delivery. Many people are diagnosed with preeclampsia first. This syndrome can be fatal to the pregnant person and the baby.

Symptoms

Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, headache, upper right belly pain and a general feeling of illness. Sometimes the syndrome happens with no symptoms.

Treatment

Treatment usually requires delivery of the baby, even if the baby is premature. Corticosteroid medicines may be needed to help the baby's lungs develop faster.
