Overview
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is an ongoing condition that happens when stomach acid or bile flows into the food pipe and irritates its lining. Having acid reflux and heartburn more than twice a week may indicate GERD.

Treatments
Relief that results from lifestyle changes and nonprescription medicines is usually temporary. Stronger medicine may be needed.
