Embolic stroke
Overview
Embolic stroke occurs when a blood clot or debris (embolus) travels from one part of the body and lodges in a narrower brain artery, blocking blood flow to the brain. A stroke is a medical emergency.
Symptoms
Symptoms include trouble walking, speaking, and understanding. Paralysis or numbness of the face, arm, or leg also may occur.
Treatments
Emergency treatment includes medications or a procedure to break up clots.
