Eclampsia
Description
Seizures and coma that happen during pregnancy or soon after childbirth.
Overview
Eclampsia can follow preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is high blood pressure and too much protein in the urine during pregnancy. Eclampsia also can happen without earlier signs of preeclampsia.
Symptoms
Symptoms that can happen before seizures include severe headaches, vision changes, confusion and changed behavior.
Treatment
Treatment includes medicines to treat and prevent seizures and lower high blood pressure. If eclampsia happens during pregnancy, the baby may need to be delivered early.
