Description

A painful swelling or infection in one or more small pouches in the digestive tract.

Overview

Diverticulitis is an inflammation or infection in one or more small pouches, called diverticula, in the digestive tract. It's common after age 50.

Symptoms

Symptoms include belly pain, fever, nausea and a change in bowel habits.

Treatments

Treatment can include rest, a liquid or low-fiber diet, and antibiotics. Serious cases may need hospital care and surgery.
