Coronary artery disease

Description

A type of heart disease that affects the main heart arteries. It causes reduced blood flow to the heart muscle.

Overview

Coronary artery disease is common. It affects the main blood vessels that send blood to the heart. The usual cause is the buildup of fats, cholesterol and other substances in and on the artery walls, a condition called atherosclerosis. High blood pressure, diabetes and obesity increase the risk of coronary artery disease.

Symptoms

Symptoms include chest pain and shortness of breath. Coronary artery disease can cause a heart attack.

Treatments

Treatments include lifestyle changes, medicines and surgery.
