Bursitis
Overview
Bursitis is painful swelling, also known as inflammation, of the fluid-filled pads that act as cushions at the joints. These fluid-filled pads are called bursae. It occurs most often at joints that perform frequent repetitive motion. This includes the shoulders, elbows and hips.
Symptoms
The affected joint may feel achy or stiff, look swollen and red, or hurt more with movement.
Treatments
Treatment includes rest, ice and pain relievers. Surgery is rarely needed.
